In the early morning hours of September 24th the Wilmington Fire Department responded to a reported house fire in the 1700 blk of Lakeview Rd in the Canby Park Section of Wilmington. Arriving crews found a working alarm with Fire showing. During the initial attack there was an event that resulted in firefighters becoming trapped within the home. The Wilmington Fire Department has announced the tragic passing of Lieutenant Christopher M. Leach, age 41 and Sr. Firefighter Jerry W. Fickes, age 51. In addition to this tragic loss two additional firefighters are in Crozer Burn center listed as critical but stable, Sr. Firefighter Firefighter Ardythe D. Hope and Firefighter Brad Speakman. There were additional Firefighters treated and released for various injuries.

The Port Penn Volunteer Fire Company extends it deepest sympathy to the families and loved ones affected by this tragic event and we are all praying for those who are still recovering. As many know Firefighter Brad Speakman is not only a member of the Port Penn Volunteer Fire Company but also a past chief of the company.
