
On Thursday evening at the 2026 Joint Installation Banquet of the New Castle County Firefighter’s Association and the New Castle County Fire Chief’s Association, Trustee Steve Divirgilio was awarded the Louis J. Amabili Memorial Firefighter of the Year Award.
Steve has been a lifelong member of the community and an Active member of the Port Penn Fire Company for 48 years. Steve is currently the longest serving consecutive active member in the history of Port Penn. Steve’s dedication to the company has allowed him to be highly regarded as a mentor, leader and role model within the organization. Steve has served faithfully over his 48 years with the company, serving as Board of Director, Treasurer, Chief Engineer, Assistant Chief and Deputy Chief.
Steve has begun his 4th consecutive term as an eight year trustee on the Board of Directors. Steve is one of two Trustees whose duties include long range fiscal, operational and administrative planning.
Steve has always had the best interests of Port Penn first and foremost. Steve serves as the New Castle County representative for the DVFA Revolving Loan Fund.
Steve’s service to the community goes back to his upbringing where he learned at young age that giving back to the community began with being a good neighbor and helping those in need. Steve finds time to contribute to the Port Penn Historical Society and serves on the Hickory Grove Cemetery Board of Directors. He is also a member of the Brandywine Rod and Gun Club located in Port Penn.
Professionally Steve’s career path is no different than his dedication to the Fire Service. Steve is a retired Senior Sargent of the New Castle County Police Department where he served faithfully in many capacities for 29 years from 1987 until his retirement in 2016. Steve remains an active retired member of F.O.P. Lodge #5.
Over the last 26 years Steve has been a local business owner that has provided employment opportunities to local residents. Through Steve’s businesses they have sponsored families, church congregations, local non-profit groups and many others in times of need.
Steve is a dedicated family man, he met his wife Tracy of 33 years and is the father of 2 grown children and actively involved in their lives in almost every aspect. Steve instills the same values he learned from his parents into his children, with hard work, effort, dedication and accountability anything is possible in life. Many at Port Penn have known Steve through his tenure and have him to thank for where they are individually and collectively as members, employees and as an organization.
